1. INTRODUCTION

All visitors wishing to enter the United Republic of Tanzania must obtain an appropriate visa, except nationals of the listed countries below, provided they are travelling on national passport of any of the following countries: -

Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Ashmore & Cartein Islands, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, British Indian Ocean Territory, Brunei, Cayman Islands, Channel Islands, Cocos Island, Cook Islands, Christmas Island, Cyprus, Dominica, Falk Island, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar Grenada, Guernsey, Guyana, Heard Island, Hong Kong, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Jersey, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malaysia, Malawi, Montserrat, Mauritius, Madagascar, Macao, Mozambique Namibia, Nauru, Niue Islands, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Romania, Ross dependency, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, Swaziland, Solomon Island, St. Kitts & Navis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, St: Helena, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks & Caicos, Tokelau, Tuvalu, The Gambia, Tonga, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Nationals of the East African community need neither visa nor entry permits to enter the United Republic of Tanzania.

If you are not a citizen of any of the above listed countries, you are advised to obtain a visa in advance to enter the United Republic of Tanzania, particularly if you are proceeding to Tanzania from a country where there is a Tanzanian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate to issue visa. We would like to add however that, visas on arrival are also available and issued at the three (3) Tanzania’s International Airports of Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam (JNIA), Kilimanjaro (KIA) and Zanzibar (ZNZ).

2. EXCEPTIONS

Visitors from a country where there is no Tanzania Embassy, High Commission or Consulate to issue visas, nor can they easily obtain such a visa from a nearest Tanzania Visa Office in their region, can proceed to Tanzania and obtain a visa at one of the four points of entries in Tanzania. These are: -

  • Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR, JNIA)
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
  • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar (ZNZ)
  • Namanga border crossing point, between Tanzania and Kenya.

The granting of a Tanzanian Visa is, in effect, only a form of pre-entry clearance. It does not guarantee permission to enter Tanzania. The immigration Officer reserves the right to grant or deny admission. Visa holders are subject to normal Immigration control at the port of entry. They should therefore carry with them, for possible presentation to Immigration officers, the documents submitted with their applications.
